An Ode to Doctors

10:58

I died on 10th Aug 2023.
tho' not declared so.
The docs were lost In thought
... wary and uncertain.

I see my family in tears...
in shocked disbelief.
I didn't feel any struggle
but smelt deep Intensive care.

Clutched and choked by
an invasive ventilator,
I was gasping wide-eyed at
weird images, hallucinating.

My tongue clipped,
my hands tied... to prevent
pulling away the BIPAP now,
I soon sink into oblivion.

Few hours later I hear
the doc call my name aloud.
I open my eyes
And feel I'm alive again. RAMAN 2.0?

Am soon out of the ventilator
tongue and arms freed now
I see the docs around
I mumble words that stumble...

The docs say I'm out of danger
will soon be out of the ICU;
and true to word, was in my ward
with my family, to convalesce.

Another week into
traumatic intensive-care spasms...
I survive more assaults to soon
be back in my ward and home again.

When I was first born
my family then, rejoiced;
and now when reborn
I sure know whom to thank...

Thank you Doctors. Saviors. Avtars.

A cartload of thanks to all of you who matter and mean a lot... all the way.

Happy Doctors' Day !!!

a premonition..

A nerve suddenly twitched
I clutched my heart in fear..
Was this an attack...? Epileptic
Or that dreaded heart attack...?

I moaned and was slumping..
Hands were all o'er me. "Hello,
are you okay?"someone yelled..
There was silence. All still..

Then I heard 'em all whispering.
Pale-faced folks in white overalls..
looking lost at the noisy monitors
in that sprawling ICU...I was alone.

My folks knew my class even when sick...and so cared to treat me best;
That branded hospital's superior corner suite... spoke the rest.

At midnight they wheeled me out..
thought I was headed to the ward.
'Twas dark and none around there
That silence was eerie. Oh, did I die?

Of the Oohs and Aahs...!

How rapidly have our lives moved on… aided by Covid and by our own desire to spend time at the "edge-of-the-seat" as loudly proclaimed by all makers of 'a spate of web- thriller' series. Like a family of proven idiots again, again and all over again, we (I mean my family) watch all those OTT releases in the last couple of years (from several of them like Ashram, Arya, Human, Ye Khali Khali Ankhen, etc to the recent Fame Game) with the hope of knowing who was behind it all? Were these real whodunits? The story-tellers now get away with murder faster than the villain(s) of the piece we are made to suspect in the 8 long episodes. Despite our binge-watching, he/she is never found and exposed. The clever, strategic advisors (as silly and ridiculous as it may sound ) to these ghastly lot of producers decide to leave the loopholes unplugged in the last episode/scene with a subtle note to the audiences that there's more to come - a sequel which will soon address this in a year or so.

So much for our intelligent, wise directors, story-tellers and actors and all their bandwagon of master strategists. And the audience like us yawn our way to bed in the early hours of the day tut-tutting to the rest of our stricken family with gestures that would mean... "I told you so!" Till they are misled again the following day...!

There has to be an ordinance banning tall claims made by these people. There also has be a sentence awarded to them of some non-baillable prison-time and an equivalent compensation of valuable man-hours spent by innocent families after being misled to watch their gory brand of violence, murders, sexual innuendos, rapes, and rotten, steamy bedroom scenes where all the so called actors have to use superlative expletives as though they are in a rush to complete what they so earnestly began. More importantly, we are forced to watch the bare behinds of all these characters with their female counterparts thrusting themselves on each other wildly in such wanton motion like beasts in the jungle, unmindful of being on camera... ooh-ing and aah-ing vulgar exultations.

They bans adult citizens' content in cinema theaters and have successfully ushered them home right into our family rooms....!
For family viewing...
Wah, family time folks!

Chandra....

 • Any minor or major event or accident that happens in anyone of our lives... one can surely expect the first phone call to be from her.
 • Anxiety and concern are inborn qualities that shape her....
 • And in striking contrast is her indefatigable love for mangoes....in any form or manner consumed in anyq private corner... be it in a train or in the secure recesses of a mobile Railway loo.
 • Lovable all the way from her leadership role as a model shopkeeper in our early school days where she helped us set up shop of all our tiny belongings like toys and little trivia we had ....and more importantly when she masterminded a Pooja of that trivia and distributed prasads of Kalyana athimber's sweets brought just that evening from his office.
 • The Star club...was another notable example of her creativity streak... full of skits, in which I acted too.
 • She is adorabl to say the least. Her most visible habit of twisting and clamping a sumptuous portion of flesh on the side of her neck with the tips of her fingers to smithereens...as a growing teenage girl...was an act medical science can never diagnose.
 • I have a hundred tales to narrate ...on her and her antics. "Dohba Dowry'....is one more.
 • Her a) quick feminine recoiling at any mention of some absurd passing profanity...b) her singing the one carnatic composition she learnt ( till her master lost track)...in all invited Navaratri homes......are all just a few of her very, very truly intrinsic qualities that bring back a treasure chest of hilarious and fond memories.
CHANDRA. Starry and wide-eyed. Engineered dramatically different. Embraced OCD as her second nature and loved it. Embarrassed and shamed the very Covid Hygiene protocol by her sense of flawlessness and spotlessness.
She will remain an enigma and her very persona wiĺl pale out all her peers who are in the race to living a contented, clean life.
Love her..all the way.
Chandra.
The Hygiene Warrior.

Vaithunna-Chandra 50 yes wedbliss

My first ever wrist watch, day n date, gold plated with a gold chain...was his and he gave it to me when I said I liked it. I was 14.

40 Rs in 1970 for my first school picnic trip he gave me when all elders at home opposed and rejected it.

To my young brain he was an idol when he narrated how he had staged a walk-out from Crompton Greaves...in Chandigarh....with the words "Let Crompton Greaves enjoy by keeping my unpaid salary for the month. I resign". Green still...it rings in my ears.

He will turn around and shed quiet tears when leaving Kolkata after taking leave from my mother...every single time.

All encompassing as is his wont... we all know how Vaithunna had seen very tough times and his state of being jobless at some point in his long career, clearly explicit in one painful expression (in that Andheri Railway Station that day when I saw him breakdown in a complete giveaway of his innermost trauma) stirs me no end. I had gone to send him off to Ramagundam I think. I cried all the way home. Can still do if I recall that incident.

His allegiance to his family he NEVER made an exhibition of. Distinguished, distinctively different from the rest, composed and markedly restrained.....he could swallow his words in one long, drawn-out state of endurance.... when faced with an acutely embarrassing family encounter. Oh how many can I recall...!

I enjoy the freedom to drink and indulge in the presence of mostly all elders in the family. BUT he is an exception. His presence instills respect not fear. He doesn't demand but deserves attention.

Difficult to find another simplistic human with such clean virtues and also a subservient husband who could take hygiene to a new level egged-on by Chandra.

Gentleman, though shalst can only be Vaithunna.

The Chandra-Vaithu combo like long nurtured wine has stood the test of time...and turbulatuons. For 5 decades of such quality existence
(sorry co-existence) we bow austerely to this duo and seek their good wishes and blessings.

Wishing them a Long, Cool, Healthy life in Perpetual Mirth.

Cheers!

Ravi Sandhya Prat.

O Dad...

Yours is not another portrait Dad..
For an annual review and remembrance..

These words, forwards don't serve,
save a brief, fleeting recall,
a glimpse of....

Your glorious, spectacular,
now buried past...
A Mastermind now IMMORTAL...

the KEY to all our current comforts and wellbeing! This Clan is super- cool as a result.

How more explicit can our gratitude be shown when a vast memorial is in our minds?

Bless us all ...you are always in our midst,Dad!

PRATical

You stormed out of all storms...
each worse than the other;
You survived 'em all....
pulling yourself together.

And as you brazen...
to face the next in store;
Now adept enough to
duck the rest and more.

It's never been a joy ride ...
Yet never seen you despair;
Never know if you were misled...
nor if all your friends were fair.

Baffles me when you make...
your moves like on a mission;
devoid of flak you manouvre...
get set for your next edition.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY PRAT....

Criss-Crossroads...

While at the crossroads....which some of us reach more often than most others do in our careers....I have been accosted with a whole lot of suggestions from a host of sympathetic people ranging from my equally languishing neighbourhood friend... to the ever so warm young wise men I stumble upon who perhaps feel stealthily good to note my discomfiture at being currently a general nuisance at home.

They tell me why not I get into the world of online training, consultancy and mentoring. "Consider your special attributes, sir..." they say.... "with your repertoire, exposure, experience etc. you should be doing a number of online sessions and earning a few lacs in under a month...and in the process build a brand and have everyone eating out of your hand while you keep raking it in...."

Mmm. Then they talk to me of webinars. The
'in-thing' now they vouch. They go on to talk of every Ajay, Azhar and Alex....Ann, Aruna and Afiza doing it effortlessly and laughing all the way to the Bank, pooh-poohing the drab Covid season.

But I, for more reasons than one, seem to resist this because to me a webinar is a dull orchestration of all your histrionics and articulation that gets wasted and spent over a flat, dumb screen. And with no certainty of whether you are being seen or heard at all clearly and consistently . .. due to perpetually error-prone Wi-Fis in most houses... while you risk talking and doing all dramatics in front of, for all that I know, a plain straight-wall.

"Where is your audience?" I ask. "Virtual? Virtual where? Who's applauding? That deliberate remark I made wasted? Why is there no excitement? Zoom in and out. How many there? Only 6 so far? What kind of promotion did we do...? Sunk our monies there for six infernal blighters ...that too virtual? Or were they the few cronies who generally attend and make their presence felt...by commenting, as in an fb live Karaoke session, ready stuff like "Amazing, Wah Wah, 10 on 10, You Rock" etc etc."

Yeah, I admit there may be exponents in the art of conducting webinars and there also maybe online superstars who carry and display their skills so effectively while netizens all over the world stay glued and follow them all to the last word...and also benefit in good measure.

If i still put in all those efforts and then get to see a very limp response I will begin to rue the day I took my first step. "No" says my daughter. "You have a class which you will never know and you will overcome all these initial hiccups easily. You will easily master this game Dad and this is right up your alley..." Maybe she would have added, "And you have no better choice now Dad,"... but she didn't. She is more confident than most of my followers ( er....from my dreamy past tho' ) about my online success and stardom.

Any which way it looks like I cannot ignore this. Not again. And I don't think there are enough avenues for a real senior like me because at my age, which is just a number I know, you either do or you might as well DO.

I shall soon begin my net practice...throw in a cork ball ...and begin to bat as whimsically as I can into the nothingness called the web.

#Webinar ...here I come...!

Corona-darona...?

Never have we all experienced a state of fear, uncertainty and chaos...like this in our lives. Every video and image forward today in the social media is only about Corona. The COVID-19.

I am no exception to this premonition of an impending catastrophe... but I am trying to remain calm by reassuring myself that all will be well. And telling myself that it has never happened before and it will never happen to me and us. But soon I see another message or a visual of the enormity of this PANDEMIC and I shrink and cringe in some untold fear. Will I survive this? Will I outlive this? I am a diabetic and am also hypertensive and have also crossed 62. In all other cases and clauses I won't qualify for I have no cough. I wash my hands everytime I pass by a tap ( My niece Chandra had taught me from school). I stay at home most times even before this spread and now more so. I love and eat home-cooked Brahmin food. Yet I am worried sick.

All my standing invitations to my cousins and inlaws and some friends stand cancelled. Am now a forced recluse. My morning newspaper I read with gloves. I wash my resistance bands while gymming to be doubly sure ( not being clear about sweat being a carrier ). I have begun my parishshanam for once in my post poonal life before I eat. I ensure distances are maintained even more than prescribed social barriers. I sleep in the living room all by myself. My wife is delighted though. I brush my teeth and bathe twice a day and also at will when in doubt. No Swiggys. No Amazon online orders. No other Big Bazaar deliveries without a complete alcohol sanitisation.

I have also abandoned my search ( done till last week ) for a new flat. Even if I resume I will not opt for amenities like Swimming pools and Community halls and Aerobic rooms in the projects.

But there is hope now because I chant all the mantras I know and I have added to the list the several forwards I have recieved. I am these few days clad in a dhothi and Kurta...all neat and fresh and clean like a newly bloomed lily with all that dew of fear bottled within...chanting away to glory. The Gods will soon stand appeased.

Corona has divided us but has chastened us beyond measure. The one indulgence and the only evening pastime I had thought was perennial has also now been withdrawn ...thanks to the new govt. order this morning closing all Liquor shops that sold the decent life-saving beverage to some of us.

Is this not hastening the chastening of humanity ...?

Take good care all of you... dear socially distanced but not ostracised friends /relatives ....and follow my footsteps. Meditate. In silence.

Will meet at the Mantri Mall on April 1st 2020.
So long till then...

Sahaj Samadhi ... mediate to meditate..

The Sahaj Samadhi course I attended, thanks to the perseverance of Shrey whose passion we all know is contagious, turned out to be good enough to provide me some answers to my ever restless mind.

Meditation to me has long been a series of miserably failed attempts after sitting cross-legged with eyes squeezed shut for barely six fully conscious minutes.

I have blogged on my elusive search to figure out how people really meditate challenging them to prove that they did. Did they discover themselves? Go deep into their own selves and speak to their own souls? The thoughtless state? Nirvana? Stripped of the material clothing of worldliness and materialism.? Wasn't that or even a brief glimpse of that considered the gateway to meditation?

Well well Ms Rajalakshmi Sampathkumar took us all through a one way journey in the beginning and got interactive in the end today and answered queries. The highlight of the whole session was that with GURUJI'S direct blessings each one of us were blessed with a unique mantra. This mantra is like a shield or an armour for us. Much is left to our faith of course.

But well you have got something to bank upon now when you sit cross-legged next. She told us that yes what we were doing so far is meditation in its entirety. Don't give up. Flowing and powerfully flowing thoughts like mine are indeed the very ideal manifestation of good meditation. The purging away of these thoughts with the help of the sacred mantra...is the solution to all our search for the most pristine form of meditation.

Thank God. I have my mantra now and I am reassured that I am on the right track. Meditation is no rocket science....and all is well with my limited assessment of my spiritual leanings.

Thanks Shrey and the many mentors AOL has in its growing empire. Count me in.

Jai Gurudev!

29 December 2018 17:32 Fast running out 2018... Breathless entry 2019... Promising great turnarounds... Clear Capable Governance...when all long-term good done lasts..short-term hurdles pass...ushering in Fresher air...Easy living... Honest-to-God Goodness... Oops...will soon be out of the stupor Of that last crazy 2018 night...! This time around tho' our wishes won't remain unfulfilled... Watch out! HAPPY GLORIOUS NEW YEAR 2019... Raman Sandhya Pratiba

Have I lost...?

Not much as I thought it was...
a quick glance forward...and I knew;
Age caught up faster than I sped...
do I now compete or withdraw...?

Been this for some seasons I know .... beat'n her in straight sets..till now..
She has that advantage point..I know
like a vanquished star i step back now.

Bowing to the booing crowd I retreat..
Now aloof, cold and distant...
Was this the same audience...rapt
in attention once danced and clap'd?

All these years had 'em all flor'd...
Thrilled they were they came n roared
Every show they whistled n cheered
growing old.. my charts still soared ...

Good for now..done and dusted clean.
and make sure the floor had the sheen
Look now for that red exit sign....
gently step out and resign.

MAHASHIVRATRI- AOL

14th July 2017.

An international color to a Hindu festival Mahasivratri....

# The 'mamopartha-samastha- durodhachayadwara..." ritual...with right - fist - on - left - palm sankalpa.. .

# 70 odd countries mix in a 150000 human mass under the clear sky, doing as told....

# A four hour upward journey transcending all pettiness ...

# Om Namashivaya namsankeetans in an outbreak of global vocal synergy....

# Soul - stirring Vedic chants reverberating in the cool scented spirtual air...

# Is this hysteria, faith or frenzy ? Exemplary Tolerance ?  A Vasudeva kudumbakam in the making ?

# Citizens of all color.. creed.. caste ...shaking a leg..Senior citizens too (I smuggled myself in here)....

Lord Shiva would endorse all this. Can happen only in this enthralling venue. Blessed I was.

Long way to unravel spirituality. But looks like i am on track.

Thanks AoL team. Thanks Shrey and others..

OM NAMASHIVAYA.

On meeting Guruji at the airport...

12th July 2017

Love is a many splendoured thing.

I had the privilege of meeting GURUJI at such close quarters at the airport this evening thanks to our ever- dependable Shrey.

Argentina, Seattle, and devotees from as far as Boston had arrived at the airport just then for the WCF... unsettling me as I was getting nervous and jittery about my first meeting.

Believe me .....for me this was the first time and I was speechless in wonder finally  seeing him floating into my range of vision. Stunned into a sheepish mode I was paralysed and ran out of words till Shrey prompted me to speak out. When I sought his Blessings he asked me my name....

To me Bhakti was never something I experienced. I am a seeker....one of this inane humanity. Simple and innocently selfish...perhaps.

I am however content tonight....for the time being. Feel like I did 4 advance courses. Ha.Ha.

When the world sways to his grace....there is innate pride. An unspoken unconditional connect. I can call this bhakti. Yes I have become spiritual...I am sure. Om Om Om

Jai Gurudev....

Trust me, babe...!!!

Dec 1998

As I flounder in an abstract air of uncertainty
with a load weighing heavily now in me
seeking just one possible escape route…

.. the wicked mind whizzes past a million
incoherent sequences that bring chaos and controversy
encompassing myriad patterns of eventualities;

Shaken terribly by the supposed aftermath
of this unintended mental exercise, I cease to react …
as your frail form quietly drifts into my mind’s vision.

You have borne me and my follies dear...
no not any less than my mother did;
jointly we’ve waded thru clear and troubled waters this far…

And now when time like speeding stations from an express train
leaves behind a horde of events so mixed …
with you darling a decent destination we’ll soon find.

Trust me !

Lààta...The refresher.

That ceasefire Smile...
that quickfire sparkle;
remedy post an outage..
ever at ease to leverage
the Clan's warm lineage..

In all our troubled times
you rise duty bound..;
reach out to assuage,
withdraw to cement...
any unseen wound.

Now there to light up..
ever to lean on ;
now there to rear ..
even there to mother.
Yes we will all recall...!

Complex inner emotion
dilutes your ..
vague nuclear vision
and exposes...
'Laata the Phenomenon'

With Time and its' passage
the mind stays trained..
the body strained..
and some image,
stained...

Say your say like you always do..
Stay your way like we
all know you.
Sway all day
Dear...Laatoo..!

She-bliss

My life had twisted and
you filled in
to flow
like in fiction.
Walkways opened,
Bridges arose and
Lo ..you set us back in motion..!

Tying tongues that wagged,
clubbing heads that shook..
you braved in with firm resolve  ;
that opened the skies and
stifled the heat,
a new rainbow
began to evolve.

When its dark dear ..
right out of a nightmare i snuggle closer
to you and connect..
there is comfort in the touch,
in the thought
that with you our lives will be
picture perfect..

Threshold...

Having walked around the fire more than once in my chequered marital life a threshold that would lead you into a new world of companionship is not really a novelty.

Wish all those who need companionship post a distracting or a deadend wedlock get to see this. A threshold. A threshold....that opens a whole new world of Laughter, Joy and that quiet little comfort of true companionship.
